How to be a Happy Single Woman

Hey, beautiful! Feeling a little down in the dumps 'cause it's a Saturday night and it seems the whole world is paired off except you? Well, snap out of it!!! Sistah Elaine is here to help. With these 10 easy steps you'll soon be feeling so fine and full of yourself you'll soon realize that a man is just the icing on your cake!

  1. Step 1
Make the most of your career or find a new one. If the career track you are presently following leaves you a little less than thrilled, change it. If the position for senior copy writer suddenly becomes available, go for it. If your dream is to be a writer, don't dream, write! The idea is not to wait for the sudden appearance of "Mr. Wonderful" to make you happy or give you confidence. True self confidence comes from personal achievement, and in today's competitive world, personal achievement is primarily defined by having a successful career. So if your 9 to 5 job is starting to feel like 9 to infinity, then it's time to kick that job to the curb and find a new one!

  2. Step 2
Take the time to decorate your living space the way you always wanted. Make the space you are living in as perfect as you can. Do not deny yourself that antique white Victorian lace comforter thinking that you would rather buy it when you have a conjugal bed to put it on. Remember this is your retreat from the outside world and whatever items catch your eye should immediately occupy a loving place in your home without a moment's thought or hesitation.

  3. Step 3
Look for quality friendships, not quantity. Friends are the people that add color and excitement to our lives. Unfortunately, it is in times of sorrow or need that most friendships are severely tested. Therefore when choosing someone as a potential "sistah" it is best to remember that a friend is more than just someone to hang out with. True friends give us the nurturing when we need to grow and the courage when it's best to stay the same.

  4. Step 4
Think of dating as an adventure. The secret to happy dating is to not have any expectations. Do not think of this man as a potential lover, potential husband, potential friend or potential anything. Just think of him as someone that you have never met before and, girl, just like Mata Hari, your goal is to learn all you can about him. Then slowly go on from there and soon you just may find yourself to be pleasantly surprised. You may find yourself your very own George Clooney.

  5. Step 5
Have fun with your appearance. Being single is the one time when you can change your appearance as often as some people change their underwear and you don't have to be concerned with someone else's opinion. So, if you are a brunette and always wanted to try life as a blonde, now is the time to do it. If you have long flowing hair and want to try a short, sassy cut, then girl, run to that barbershop and tell him to clip away! If the results are less than wonderful, no one will be there to remind you and no one will ever have to know. (Girl, that's why they invented hats!) If, however, you turn out looking absolutely fabulous, then go out there and paint the town red, white and YOU!

  6. Step 6
Control your spending habits. As single women who only have ourselves to rely on for financial support, getting a handle on our expenses is vital. But for many women, the idea of curbing their spending habits seems as unlikely as marrying Johnny Depp. While the dream is quite nice, that's all it turns out to be. But all you really need is the determination to pay all your present bills, the awareness of how you spend your money every month and the discipline to think before you purchase. And once you master these skills, you'll see your bank account filling up in no time!

  7. Step 7
Indulge in some private time. After working all week at our great career, spending time with our true friends and going out on all our great dates, a single woman can get awfully burnt out. This is why setting aside some private time is so important. Private time not only allows us to recoup our energy, but if spent properly, we can make ourselves feel quite pampered. Before we can "take care of business," we need to take care of ourselves. And setting aside at least an hour per day to do so is the best thing we can ever do for ourselves. Some ideal private time "escapes" include: taking a long bubble bath, listening to your favorite CD over and over or treating yourself to breakfast in bed. Whatever it is that takes you away from your world for just a little while, just do it and do it proud!

  8. Step 8
Work that body. A healthy body is the key to looking and feeling beautiful. Nothing encourages a beautiful body more than exercise. Along with toning you physically, exercise has also been proven to tone you mentally. Researchers have discovered that even after a mild work-out, creativity levels soared—all the more reason to exercise. So whether you prefer low-impact aerobics or a 12-mile jog, don't just sit there thinking about it-get that beautiful body moving!

  9. Step 9
Expand your horizons. In today's fast-paced society, knowledge is the way to get ahead. And nowhere is knowledge more beneficial than in the lives of single women. Whether learning about the latest tax shelter or checking out the latest art exhibit, the more you know, the more productive your life can be. Of course another good reason for acquiring knowledge is the way you will feel both fulfilled and confident. So read newspapers, watch at least two news shows per week, go to a museum or take a class. In other words, work that beautiful brain!

  10. Step 10
Appreciate all the really wonderful things you are. Whether we are striking 5'10" blondes or cute 5'2" brunettes, we ALL deserve to be loved. But before we can receive love, we need to feel love—love of self. Love of self happens when we accept ourselves for who we are—the good and the not so good. While it is easy to appreciate our good qualities, it is when we are thinking negatively that the following words must be remembered: ALL of us on this planet are special and we ALL deserve the best that life has to offer! Once we realize this, the world can become our oyster! Now go out there and strut your stuff!

Why Aren't You Married Yet? Dealing with Family Over the Holidays

"I'm going to be asked by my aunt, yet again, why I'm not married, and am tired of answering the question with 'Because I haven't met anyone yet.' Because the look on my aunt's face when I say that is, like, triumphant. 'Oh dear,' she says, shaking her head. 'I guess, well,’ and here she smiles, ‘no one's really good enough. Such a shame. How old are you now?'"

“My brothers are going to tease me about gaining weight. I need a quick answer that doesn’t humiliate me. Help!”

“My mother will put down my boyfriend—a fabulous carpenter just starting out--with little snyde comments like, “And what do you do again, dear?”

Okay darling earth girls, time to get smart—now, before Christmas.

Answers to stupid questions require planning ahead, lest they make you so mad you lose your cool.. Here are three tried-and-true ways to answer the world’s most obnoxious questions. Note that they share a theme, and that it’s the theme you’re to remember.

1. ANYONE WHO ASKS YOU WHY YOU’RE NOT MARRIED DESERVES A BLOW-OFF ANSWER.—AS GOOFY AND INSINCERE AS YOU CAN MAKE IT. Don’t take the question or the person seriously, as it’s not a sincere question but rather one designed to make you uncomfortable (for, after all, what answer can you give that doesn’t require an intimate, honest exchange?). So, unless you’re prepared to level the person and start a fight, evade the question a breezy, even goofy answer—it deflects the hostility and you come out looking cheerful and unfazed.

2. To hone this skill, try anticipating the questioner’s real point, and offer the answer she or he wants to hear. "I guess no one's good enough for me, Aunt Jane" is very good, as it saves her the trouble of implying just that. “No one would ever marry me because I’m far too stupid” is another good one. Whatever you suspect the hidden agenda is.

3. Disarm the questioner with something more interesting than the question. "I came close to marrying Fred Auntie, but he got worried when he discovered how rich I am." At least she’ll do a double take. You? Rich? How and when? Huh? An excellent answer. Then turn and pour yourself a drink—and don’t join her again.

The theme here is to disarm the rude questioner in any way you can. The goofier the answer, the better. "Gosh, Grandpa, I DO want to get married and have found just the right guy....but my psychic told me not to get married until February of 2011. So I'm waiting. " (Grandpa won't know whether to ask about the psychic or the reasoning for the month of February, or why he didn't know you were engaged--by which point you'll have dashed out of the room.) Your “psychic” could also be your guru, or your priest or your Groom’s mother. Anybody who hasn’t been introduced to the family, nor heard of at all, will do. You want to sound like it’s all taken care of—by some lunatic no one knows.

For a roomful of family friends who all seem to be asking the same question and can’t shut up, try. "Oh, you haven’t heard, Uncle Bill. I AM married! I just haven't announced it yet! You're the first to know--so keep it a secret for me for now, okay?" Bill will want to know when you’re going to tell everyone. Just say, “Soon! Very soon!”

Same for your boyfriend, the neophyte carpenter. Have him tell your mother he’s working on a chest of drawers for the queen of England . And tell your brothers that the reason you’ve gained weight is that you’re on the girls’ basketball team and are taking steroids till you reach the proper strength.

See?

And then walk away and find someone to talk to who loves you just the way you are..

Happy Holidays!

Nobody really cares if you're miserable, so you might as well be happy.  ~Cynthia Nelms

Happiness is always a by-product.  It is probably a matter of temperament, and for anything I know it may be glandular.  But it is not something that can be demanded from life, and if you are not happy you had better stop worrying about it and see what treasures you can pluck from your own brand of unhappiness.  ~Robertson Davies

Those who can laugh without cause have either found the true meaning of happiness or have gone stark raving mad.  ~Norm Papernick

The foolish man seeks happiness in the distance; the wise grows it under his feet.  ~James Openheim

Often people attempt to live their lives backwards; they try to have more things, or more money, in order to do more of what they want, so they will be happier.  The way it actually works is the reverse.  You must first be who you really are, then do what you need to do, in order to have what you want.  ~Margaret Young

Indeed, man wishes to be happy even when he so lives as to make happiness impossible.  ~St. Augustine

There are two things to aim at in life:  first, to get what you want; and after that, to enjoy it.  Only the wisest of mankind achieve the second.  ~Logan Pearsall Smith, Afterthoughts, 1931

This is my "depressed stance."  When you're depressed, it makes a lot of difference how you stand.  The worst thing you can do is straighten up and hold your head high because then you'll start to feel better.  If you're going to get any joy out of being depressed, you've got to stand like this.  ~Charlie Brown

Happiness is like a butterfly which, when pursued, is always beyond our grasp, but, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you.  ~Nathaniel Hawthorne

Women 'more likely to remember first pair of shoes rather than first kiss'

Whether they are a pair of Manolo Blahnik’s, Jimmy Choos, such as those worn by Sarah Jessica Parker in Sex and the City, or just an ordinary pair of high street shoes, more than 92 per cent of women could remember the first shoes they bought with their own money.

Less than two, however, in three recalled the name of the person they first kissed, the survey found.

An overwhelming 96 per cent of women said they regretted having thrown away a pair of shoes, while only 15 per cent felt sorry at dumping a boyfriend.

More than 1,000 women were questioned about their feelings towards their footwear and what they could remember about their shoes compared to their relationship memories.

Experts said the reasons behind women’s fondness for footwear were down to their shoe buying habits.

Many women buy a new pair of shoes for a special occasion, like a wedding, birthday or special party.

And much to their partner's annoyance, many women hang on old shoes, building up a sizeable collection by middle age, even if many go unworn most of the time.

The survey was carried out for the, which sells innovative shoe storage solutions.

Glendon Lloyd, director of website tszuji.co.uk, which commissioned the survey, said: "These results show that women are even more attached to their footwear than previously thought.

"People always think of women storing old love letters in a shoebox, but in many cases, the shoes themselves are even more precious."

"Women treat shoes like best friends. And it seems their footwear memories last longer than those of their past lovers.

Previous research has shown that the average woman has 19 pairs of shoes.

But she only wears four pairs regularly and one quarter of the average woman's shoes have only been worn once.

One in six women has more than 30 pairs of shoes in their closets, while a third have trouble finding the room to store then all.

On average, women purchase four pairs of shoes per year.

While the majority of women say their shoe buying habits have not created money problems, one in seven have hidden a new pair of shoes from their partner.

Six in ten women have regretted at least one shoe purchase.
